Wonderfully extracted with deep ruby color with classic aromas of dried cherries, leather and smoke. An intense burst of cherry cola fruit flavors lead to more subtle notes of anise, tobacco, and sweet vanilla. Beautifully balanced and framed by silky tannins, this wine will age well over the next 5-8 years.
About This Wine:
Griffin’s Lair vineyard lies at the southern edge of the Sonoma Coast appellation just west of Sears Point and has gained a good amount of notoriety through its Syrah and Pinot Noir programs with limited production wineries. Griffin’s Lair has a distinct marine influence due to its proximity to San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean which makes it perfect for growing Pinot Noir.
Growing conditions in 2008 were excellent for Pinot Noir. The relatively early harvest brought on by a very dry spring and warm summer saved most Pinot Noir from some of the weather difficulties experienced later in the season. The yields from our specific vineyard blocks were very low lending concentration and depth to this vintage. Pommard and 667 clones continue to be the foundation of this wine and add distinctly different characteristics. The Pommard clone provides the elegant structure and strong backbone which is the foundation of our winemaking style, while the 667 clone brings brighter fruit flavors and a silky richness that is enigmatic of all great Pinot Noirs.
Our small production allowed our winemaker, Rolando Herrera, to craft this wine from harvest to bottle. Extended maceration on the skins provides a powerful extraction and deep color. We used 100% new French oak in aging this wine to enhance its structure and bring forth additional toasty aromas and flavors.
