With our first Chardonnay, we set forth to make a wine that let the true character of the Chardonnay grape shine. Far too often, this beautiful grape is buried under the heavy hand of oak. That said, some oak is needed to provide elegance and polish. This wine was barrel fermented and aged with only 25% new French oak. The result is a lean and racy wine with great acidity, however a wine with just the right amount of richness and structure.
We were able to secure a small block of Chardonnay from the Clone 4 root stock within the Three Starrs Vineyard. The vineyards southeast location within the Russian River Valley is slightly warmer than other sites we considered. Clone 4 is known for its ability to ripen evenly while maintaining great acid structure and balance.
